I had so much fun watching the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee last week. All of the kids were amazing. If you haven’t seen Faizan Zaki’s winning moment, you can see it here.
From the research I did for my middle-grade novel Spelling it Out, I know that making it to the final’s of the Bee has nothing to do with random chance. Every speller there has spent hours memorizing, training, studying, and learning strategies that will help them become terrific spellers. So well done, spellers! You are an inspiration to me and to so many other people. I admire your persistence, your passion, and your love of language.
For these reasons, I am so delighted and humbled to share that Spelling it Out is the June 2025 book club selection for the Bee’s Bookshelf, which is the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s monthly bookclub.
If you loved watching the Bee and want a better understanding of how kids prepare for this monumental competition, Spelling it Out might be just up your alley. Get your copy here! And keep the magic of the Scripps National Spelling Bee going!
